The Sunday Creek Watershed
The Sunday Creek Watershed covers 139 square miles, stretching from southern Perry

County in the north to Athens and Morgan Counties in the south and east. It is bordered

by Monday Creek on the west and Federal Valley Creek to the east, all which drain into

the Hocking River.

The Watershed consists of mostly rural areas with several small communities, and

portions of Wayne National Forest lands. The watershed is located in Appalachian Ohio,

consisting of both rolling and steep hills with meandering streams cutting out the flat

bottoms.

The region boomed when the demand for coal was high and coal mines were abundant.

Red clay was also abundant in the soil and brick factories also provided economic

benefits in the region. However, these industries have faded for the most part leaving

their scars on the watershed with many environmental problems and few economic

opportunities for the area.

Goals of the Sunday Creek Watershed Group (SCWG)
  • Restore and preserve the water quality of Sunday Creek
  • Protect and promote healthy habitat for local flora and fauna
  • Build awareness through community outreach and education
  • Facilitate restoration and reclamation projects / Generate funding from government agencies to aid in cleanup efforts.
  • Promote recreational activities
  • Work with area universities to conduct applied research

Description

The Sunday Creek Watershed Group is sponsored by Rural Action; a nonprofit organization that is membership based promoting social, economic and environmental justice in Appalachian Ohio. The Sunday Creek Watershed Group (SCWG) is committed to restoring and preserving water quality through community interaction, conservation, and education in pursuit of a healthy ecosystem capable of supporting biodiversity and recreation. Some of the major water quality impacts on Sunday Creek include acid mine drainage, improperly treated wastewater, illegal dumping, and sedimentation. Our group focuses restoration activities around these issues.

The Sunday Creek Watershed is 139 square miles (88,775 acres). It encompasses part of Perry, Athens, and Morgan Counties. Sunday Creek measures 27 miles long and starts flowing North of Corning and flows south through Chauncey where it enters into the Hocking River. Sunday Creek Watershed is primarily wooded (78%), 38% of the watershed has been deep mined for coal, and 15% of the land is public, owned by the Wayne National Forest.
